One, the Suns were going to let Shawn Marion walk after the season. This way they at least get something in return for the Matrix.
Two, at the time of the trade the Suns had the best record in the NBA, if you don't count the Boston Celtics, which I don't because they play in the Eastern Conference (half of their wins aren't legit.) But was anyone intimidated by the Suns....no. That's why they had to make this trade. Now people are wondering and thinking how they are going to matchup with the Suns.
Three, the San Antonio Spurs. The Suns have not been able to get by their hated cheap shot rivals from Texas. They can run by just about anybody, but when the Spurs slow the game down to a half court offense the Suns just can't compete... or at least they couldn't. With Shaq onboard that will change the dynamics of that matchup.
This trade has a lot of similarities to the Suns acquiring Charles Barkley back in the early 90s. Both are characters and certainly not afraid to speak their minds. Both are a bit on the heavy side. Both are at the end of their careers. I believe the one difference is simple. Chicago doesn't have #23 anymore. Suns over the Celtics in 6.

Come on Burton! Shaq is a washed up, fat a**, has been. If he plays 15 games for the Suns this year without going down with a hangnail you’ll be lucky. With any luck however, you might get another excuse for why they will lose to the Spurs in the playoffs again this year. All those air balls from the free throw line. And that’s on the assumption that they can even get by Denver, Houston, Golden State, Portland, or whatever Western Conference door mat the face in the first round. The commish provided the gift excuse last year and saved the Suns the embarrassment of losing to aged Spurs at full strength. The only way this trade works, is if Skinner some how becomes Dwight Howard, and can come in off the bench and make up for the absence of Marion and the presence of Shaq. And on the comparison to the Barkley trade. I also think the one difference is simple. Charles Barkley could still beat Dick Bavetta up and down the basketball court. Steve Kerr better get to polishing up that resume. He’ll need it come May. Jazz over Detroit in 3. Three you say? That’s right. When the Jazz beat the Pistons 125 to 45 it will count for two.
Good comment, John. You look more right than I do right now. But I'm sticking with the Suns. They'll pick it up come playoff time.
My previous comment was made with tongue planted firmly in cheek, but I was hoping to get you a little more fired up than that. Keep up the good word "from the cheap seats." You have at least one fan.
Not even my mom will read this. Thanks John for visiting and commenting.
